Jay Owens – Chief Rabban

Jay W. Owens was born on February 27, 1957 in Traer, Iowa and still lives and works there today.  Jay graduated from North Tama High School in Traer and Hawkeye Institute of Technology.

Jay joined the family business, L. L. Owens & Associates, with his father Lee Owens and brother Jim.  The brothers purchased the business from their father and is an independent insurance agency.  Jay is the third generation and the family business has been in Traer since 1911.

Jay was the first 18 year old raised a Master Mason in Hesperia Lodge #340 in Traer, Iowa.  He has been past Master four times and is presently the secretary of Hesperia Lodge.  Jay is also a lifetime member of the Scottish Rite.

Jay has been a Shriner since 1976 and has been president of the Motor Express, Tama County Shrine Club, the Firehouse Gang and the Oriental Band.  Jay is also member of the Kruzers, the Hospital Dads, the Director’s Staff and the Oriental Band.  Jay served two years as a Trustee for El Kahir and secretary of the building committee.  Jay’s dad, Lee Owens, was a 40 year member of the Oriental Band.

Jay retired from the Traer Fire Department after 30 years as an engineer.  He has been an EMT since 1977 and still volunteers for The Traer Ambulance Service.  He also enjoys working at the Iowa Speedway since 2006.  Jay is past president of the Traer Golf Course, Traer Chamber of Commerce and was a volunteer for Troop 304 of the Boy Scouts.

Away from the fraternity Jay & Connie like to take their 1965 Barracuda to local car shows and cruises.  Jay likes to go to any kind of motor sports especially drag races.

Jay married Connie Rund of Traer on May 22, 1982 at St Paul Catholic Church in Traer.  They have three grown children, Paula & Jeremy Kubovec, Tyler & Abby in Lisbon,  Jonathan & Katie Owens, Ruth & Reed in Ankeny and Mallory Owens of Shell Rock.
